Here's some science worth toasting: A new study shows that a post-workout pint is better for rehydration than a glass of water.
The study tapped 25 students to run on a treadmill in 104-degree heat until they were exhausted. Half of the guys (the lucky
ones) were given a pint of Spanish lager to refuel; the rest, plain old water. After that, the students were allowed to drink
as much water as they pleased.
The beer-drinkers rehydrated "slightly better," a professor says, probably from the carbon dioxide and carbs — but that
doesn't mean it's not reason to celebrate.
Try tippling with the most satisfying brews under 140 calories (not an "Ultra" in the bunch). When you're done, use what's
left over to bathe, polish your pots, catch mice, or fashion a makeshift compass with tips from our guide to 32 things you
can do with beer.
Better yet, accompany that post-run sip with one of our many beer-based recipes: beer bread, beer-braised beef with onions,
beer-b-q chicken, and our favorite, BBQ beer ribs.
Any way you slice it (or marinate it or pour it), this is news worth raising you glass over. Happy hour can't come too soon.
